When I began my initial research in 2008 it quickly became clear that a lot of companies such as SolarCity in the Bay Area were getting into installing grid-tied solar systems. With a change in the legislation PG&E was now “forced’ to buy back excess capacity from individual homes (much more about that later) and with the new renewable energy federal/state tax credits and pricing pressure on PV panels from China these companies were rushing to capitalize on the opportunity of supplying every home in California with a new solar system.
No one however knew anything about off-grid systems. After some more research I finally found Sierra Solar Systems in Grass Valley, CA. The owner Jon Hill was very helpful in putting together a quote for me and explaining the inner workings of a off-grid solar system.
